From May 4th to 10th, Canadians across the country are encouraged to take part in Emergency Preparedness Week, an annual event that helps individuals and families become more prepared for emergencies of all kinds.
Floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and power outages can happen with little warning. Taking a few simple steps now—like preparing an emergency kit, making a plan, and staying informed—can help you respond effectively if disaster strikes. Whether you live in a rural area or a busy city centre, being prepared helps ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.
This year’s theme is “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.” It highlights the importance of understanding the potential emergencies in your area and how to plan for them. For Nova Scotians, this might include severe weather events, coastal flooding, or extended power disruptions.
Everyone has a role to play in emergency preparedness. Families should review and update their emergency plans, workplaces can revisit their safety protocols, and individuals can take time to build or restock their emergency kits. Preparedness saves lives—and it starts with awareness.
For tools, checklists, and more information about how you can be ready, visit the official Emergency Preparedness Week page.
Let’s take this opportunity to plan ahead and stay safe—because when we’re prepared, we’re stronger together.
