As your health critic, I introduced legislation for a $1,400 non-refundable Caregiver Tax Credit, modeled after Manitoba’s successful program. Unfortunately, the Houston Conservatives will likely defeat the bill. Nevertheless, I remain committed to advocating for this support to ease the financial burden on Nova Scotians caring for sick family members, friends, or neighbours.
Caregivers are an integral part of our healthcare system, providing essential care that allows people to stay in their homes and communities. However, many unpaid caregivers are left without support due to strict eligibility rules. This tax credit would ensure more caregivers receive the recognition and financial relief they deserve.
Organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society and Caregivers Nova Scotia have been calling for such support. Caring for a loved one is emotionally and financially demanding, and this tax credit is a simple and fair solution to help those who give so much.
I will continue to push for this legislation and advocate for the needs of caregivers in our province.
