Nova Scotia’s housing crisis deserves more than a part-time solution

Across Halifax Armdale and communities throughout Nova Scotia, people are being squeezed by sky-high rents, limited affordable options, and growing barriers to homeownership. It’s no surprise that Halifax is now ranked more expensive than Toronto when it comes to cost of living. The housing crisis is deepening – and Nova Scotians are feeling it.

In the face of this growing crisis, one of Premier Tim Houston’s first moves was to eliminate the dedicated Department of Housing, placing the entire portfolio under a broader Department of Growth and Development.

This is not what leadership looks like in a housing crisis.

Housing is not a side project – it’s a fundamental human need

Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to call home. From renters facing repeated hikes, to seniors struggling to stay in the communities they built, to young families priced out of the market – this crisis is real, urgent, and getting worse.

When Nova Scotians are making impossible choices between rent, groceries, and heat, the response shouldn’t be to water down accountability. We need a government that takes this seriously.

That means restoring a dedicated Housing Department – and appointing a Minister whose full-time job is to fix it.
