Er Closed Halifax Armdale

Nova Scotians Deserve Better than Constant ER Closures

Lack of transparency. No accountability. Growing risk.

Emergency departments across Nova Scotia are closing more frequently than ever before – and many rural communities are being hit hardest. A recent CBC News report highlights what many Nova Scotians already know: access to emergency care is no longer guaranteed.

Despite the provincial government’s silence, residents are feeling the impact firsthand, waiting longer for care, travelling farther in urgent situations, and facing the anxiety that comes with not knowing if help will be there when it’s needed most.

Silence from government benches – and boots on the ground

As the NSNDP’s Health Critic, I continue to raise the issue of rural ER closures. While government MLAs from affected areas sat quietly, I was speaking up – and stepping in.

During the Easter and Victoria Day long weekends, I put on my MD hat and helped in Yarmouth as a physician to fill the gaps. Since 2022, I’ve also been covering emergency department shifts in Canso whenever possible – including last month.

This is not just a policy issue. It’s about people. And Nova Scotians should not be forced to accept these closures as the new normal.

Emergency care must be available when and where it’s needed

The Premier promised to fix healthcare. Instead, we are seeing systemic failures – and fewer answers.

When emergency care is out of reach, patient outcomes suffer. Lives are put at risk. Community trust in our healthcare system is eroded.

We must demand a real, transparent plan to stabilize our emergency departments – and a commitment to rural healthcare that goes beyond press releases.

Nova Scotians shouldn’t have to choose between silence and struggle. Access to emergency care is not optional; it’s essential.
