Celebrating African Heritage Month in our community

February marks African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia, a time to reflect on and celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Nova Scotians. This year’s provincial theme, “Legacy in Action: Celebrating Black Brilliance,” honours the living legacy of Black Nova Scotians while highlighting the enduring impact of their historic communities.

The theme also resonates with the reflections on the past decade of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent. This global initiative aims to strengthen cooperation and raise awareness of the experiences, histories, and achievements of people of African descent worldwide.

Nova Scotia’s Historic Legacy

Nova Scotia is home to 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities, each with a profound and complex history spanning over two centuries. African Heritage Month provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the culture, legacy, achievements, and contributions of African Nova Scotians, both past and present.

As a community, we remain committed to addressing anti-Black racism in workplaces and communities while taking steps to advance meaningful change.
