gardening tools and flowers in the garden

Growing healthy schools

The province is expanding the Grow Eat Learn program through Nourish Nova Scotia, which helps schools start and maintain gardens across the province. The program provides grants to municipalities, non-profit and community organizations, post-secondary institutions and Mi’kmaq communities to help them respond to and prepare for climate change impacts, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of the program, garden mentors will work with schools across the province to start new gardens and make existing ones even better. Teachers will also get new learning tools focused on the environment and climate change. The program will also provide schools with resources such as compost bins and rain barrels to support their gardening efforts.

School gardens give students better access to fresh, healthy food, as well as offer hands-on learning about growing food, cooking, and caring for the environment. The food from the gardens can be used in school cooking clubs and afterschool programs, giving students healthy options and helping them learn how to cook. Gardens also bring school communities together and give students a chance to connect with nature.
