The Caregiver Benefit Program provides a monthly payment of $400 to eligible caregivers who meet the program criteria. This benefit is designed to ease the financial burden and recognize the vital contributions of caregivers in our communities.
Who is Eligible?
To qualify for the Caregiver Benefit Program, both the caregiver and the person receiving care (care recipient) must meet certain requirements:
Care Recipient Eligibility:
- Must be a Nova Scotia resident with a valid health card.
- Must have a high level of care needs as assessed by a care coordinator.
- Must live in a private home (not a long-term care facility).
- Must have a household income of $22,125 or less if single, or $37,209 or less for a couple.
Caregiver Eligibility:
- Must be 19 years or older.
- Must provide 20 or more hours of assistance per week to the care recipient.
- Cannot receive payment for providing care to the individual, such as through a homecare agency or other organization.
What Kind of Support Does the Benefit Recognize?
Caregivers assist with a variety of tasks that allow individuals to remain at home. These may include:
- Personal care, such as bathing and dressing.
- Meal preparation and feeding assistance.
- Medication reminders and administration.
- Transportation to medical appointments or other essential services.
- Emotional support and companionship.
