Rod’s Report: Summer Conversations, Community BBQ, and Concerns at Your Door

Summer is in full swing and our team is back doing what we do best, knocking on doors and having real conversations with the people of Halifax Armdale. Whether it’s at your doorstep, a local event, or just out in the neighbourhood, I’ve always believed the best way to represent you is by showing up and listening.

We’re out canvassing Tuesday evenings, Friday afternoons, and Saturdays, and I want to thank everyone who’s taken a few minutes to chat with us. Your stories, your struggles, wins, and questions are what shape my work at Province House. I made a commitment during the election to meet people where they are. That hasn’t changed.

What I’m Hearing from You

Affordable and Safe Housing
Far too many residents in Halifax Armdale are facing serious housing challenges. Whether it’s skyrocketing rents, unsafe living conditions, or landlords failing to address things like mold, pests, or basic maintenance, this issue came up again and again. Housing is a human right, and we’re continuing to push for policies that ensure everyone has access to a safe, affordable place to call home.

Immigration Pathways and Permanent Residency
Newcomers from countries like Syria, Ukraine, China, and across South Asia have shared frustrations and uncertainty around immigration processes. We’ve heard you. We’re speaking directly with provincial and federal ministers to get real answers for families, workers, and employers alike. Supporting newcomers is key to building a strong and inclusive Halifax Armdale, and this has become one of our top priorities.

Support for Autism and Schools
I continue to hear from families whose children with autism are not getting the school support they need. This includes inconsistent access to educational assistants and the resources required to thrive in our classrooms. It’s unacceptable. I’m pushing for action so every child has the opportunity to learn in a supportive environment.

The NSP Data Breach
The Nova Scotia Power data breach raised some serious questions—and you’ve made it clear that the answers so far aren’t cutting it. Many of you have asked: Why did NSP have our SINs to begin with? The Leader of the Official Opposition, Claudia Chender, has raised these questions in the Legislature, and we continue to demand accountability. We also know that extending credit monitoring to five years still doesn’t feel like enough. We hear you and we’re not letting this go.

Strong Mayor Powers
The provincial government’s plan to grant “strong mayor” powers has generated real concern in Halifax Armdale. I’ve heard from residents who feel this undermines local democracy and disrespects the role of city councillors and residents in shaping our communities. I stand with you in opposing this move and will continue to advocate for local decision-making.

Community Spotlight

Pop-Up Office Hours
We recently hosted our first satellite office day in Bayers Westwood, and it was a great success! We’ll be back again soon, watch my socials for dates and details. Our goal is to make connecting with our office as simple and accessible as possible.

Supporting Local Groups with MLA Funds
Just a quick reminder that every MLA receives a small discretionary budget to support local community groups and initiatives. We follow the Speaker’s rules to report this funding transparently and you’ll always know where and how it’s being used.

Join Us at the Community BBQ!

Mark your calendars! On Saturday, August 3rd from 1–4pm, we’re hosting a non-partisan Community BBQ, a chance to relax, connect, and enjoy a great afternoon with neighbours. There’ll be music, food, face painting, and fun for all ages. Need a ride? Just call the office and we’ll make it happen.
