Shingles Vaccine

Shingles Vaccine Now Free for Seniors

Since last week, Nova Scotians aged 65 and older have been able to book their free shingles vaccine. While this is welcome news, it’s important to note that many seniors have already faced significant financial barriers to this vaccine for far too long.

Making it free now is the right move but shingles doesn’t have a peak season, so a six month delay in making good on this promise is too long. The lag falls short of the mantra that we’re getting “more care faster” and feels more like important care, later.

As your MLA, I believe strongly in public health measures that protect people and improve quality of life. Vaccines play a vital role in preventing illness, reducing strain on the healthcare system, and keeping our communities healthier and more resilient.

Shingles is a serious viral infection. It causes a painful, burning rash that can lead to nerve pain lasting months or even years. People over 65 are at higher risk, especially those who’ve had chickenpox earlier in life. The Shingrix vaccine is highly effective in preventing shingles and its complications.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The shingles vaccine (Shingrix) is now free for all Nova Scotians aged 65 and older.
  • You can book an appointment through your primary healthcare provider or online at novascotia.ca/routinevaccine.
  • Two doses are needed for full protection.
  • The program officially begins May 28, though appointments can be booked now.

I’ll continue to speak up for timely, equitable access to healthcare for everyone—because no one should have to wait for the care they need.
