Wildfire risk season is upon us and provincial burn restrictions are now in effect until October 15.
During wildfire season, burning is not permitted anywhere in the province between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m to help eliminate the chance of wildfires occurring.
Weather, temperature, and humidity data are collected daily to calculate fire risk and determine burn restrictions. This data is collected from more than 30 stations across the province in order to provide Nova Scotians the best times to burn.
Burn restrictions cover all outdoor fires, including those in backyard burn pits, brush burning, and campfires that are not in private, municipal, provincial, or federal campgrounds with proper campfire facilities.
Each day at 2 p.m., the province provides updates through its interactive BurnSafe map to indicate when and where burning is allowed. Counties marked in green permit burning after 2 p.m., those in yellow allow burning after 7 p.m., and counties in red have a burn ban for the entire day.
Daily burn restrictions are also available by recorded message on the toll-free phone line 1-855-564-2876 (BURN).
In case of an emergency, Nova Scotians can report wildfires by calling 1-800-565-2224 or 911.
