Rod’s Report: Remembrance Day, Armdale Community Development, and First Annual Community Report

In honour of Remembrance Day I would like to recognize the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 152 Spryfield. Their mission is to serve veterans, which includes serving military and RCMP members and their families, to promote remembrance and to serve our communities and our country. On behalf of the residents of Halifax Armdale, I wish to thank you for your service.

Development in Halifax Armdale

What I’m Hearing from You

Since day one of taking office, many of you have raised concerns about development and potential new buildings across the riding. The recurring ideas and concerns I am hearing are:

  • You recognize the need for new construction to provide much-needed affordable housing for people who want to live and work in Halifax Armdale.
  • You are not opposed to new construction, however:
  • You want to know what is being planned for the community and to be involved.
  • You have concerns about the impact new construction will have on traffic, congestion, and travel times, and whether it will be the right fit for your neighbourhood.
  • You have asked whether the infrastructure—such as roads, sidewalks, and water and sewer services—will be added to meet the projected growth of thousands of new people in the riding.

When chatting with you on your doorsteps, we also discussed how this infrastructure will need to include not only roads, but also schools, daycare facilities, services for seniors, and health care facilities. How can this growth occur when the province and city are not meeting the current needs of citizens?

Liveable Armdale Coalition

These are all valid concerns that need to be heard and discussed. For this reason, I was happy to see so many people attend the Town Hall Meeting hosted by the Liveable Armdale Coalition at the Armdale Yacht Club on October 21st to discuss the proposed development at 1102 Purcell’s Cove Rd. Thank you to the organizers, Anthony Rosborough and Bonita Dixon for this event. It was great to see so many people out, and many different views and ideas were brought forward. The sense of concern and community was palpable.

I was also glad to see the developer Mr. Danny Chedrawe attend and present himself and his ideas to the group. I was happy to hear there will be opportunities for community input even before the project advances to the city. This type of community meeting and conversation between the community and the developer so early in the process are rare. Again, thank you to the organizers for creating this dialogue. I am happy to help when and where I can, and I believe you are in good hands and off to a great start.

Potential Developments

Through conversations with constituents, I am aware of other potential developments at 41 Cowie Hill Road and off of Ridge Valley Road. In the coming weeks, I will be reaching out to the city and provincial agencies to learn more about the status of these developments and will keep you informed. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact my office so that we can look into these issues with you.

My career change from family physician to MLA has created a steep learning curve on municipal and provincial infrastructure planning and development. I want to thank District 11 Councillor Patty Cuttell, who is an urban and city planner by trade, for her time, expertise, and education on all of this.

Halifax is facing a great deal of change. The lines of communication and decision-making between the municipal and provincial government are not clear and are adversarial at times. One of my goals as your MLA is to keep the community informed and to advocate for your input into changes that will impact you directly. It is not an easy task, but by bringing forward your questions and concerns, we can overturn rocks together to find the answers.

There are so many other things I would like to discuss with you, but I would prefer to chat in person rather than write you a long-winded report. Therefore…
