Rod’s Report: Wrapping Up Summer and Looking Ahead
Summer is nearing its end, and what an active summer it has been! Part of my commitment to you, the residents, was to stay in touch consistently – not just at election time. So far, my team and I have knocked on 80% of the homes in Halifax Armdale, and we plan to reach all parts of the riding by the one-year anniversary of the election on November 26.
I want to thank everyone who took time out of their busy summers to chat on your doorstep and to those who joined us at our First Annual Armdale Community BBQ. On August 2nd, we welcomed nearly 200 residents for hotdogs, hamburgers, handshakes, and meaningful conversations.
What I’ve Been Hearing
This summer, your feedback has been loud and clear, concerns about healthcare, housing, affordability, traffic, and the proposed “strong mayor” powers have been top of mind in our conversations.
On traffic: On Wednesday, August 14, I met with the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, the Hon. Kim Masland, along with Deputy Minister Paul LaFleche. We discussed traffic challenges under provincial jurisdiction. While no specific commitments were made at the meeting, senior staff have agreed to review areas that are most affected by chronic traffic issues.
Housing, healthcare, and support services: I continue to work with individuals and local groups who have reached out for help with housing access, healthcare navigation, immigration concerns, and educational support for children with specific needs.
Long-term care: I’ve also heard from many seniors and their families about the growing challenges with long-term care accessibility. To help move that conversation forward, we’re hosting a Community Home and Long-Term Care Consultation on September 27 at the Chocolate Lake Community Centre from 2–6 PM. More details will be shared soon, including a chance to register to speak. I hope you’ll join us.
What’s Ahead This Fall
Our office is returning to regular hours starting September 15. We’re open Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM. We reserve Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for community appointments in the office, but we’re happy to accommodate other times that work better for you – just reach out!
Province House resumes on September 27, and I’ll be back in the Legislature with the Official Opposition caucus. We’ll be bringing forward the issues we’ve heard from you all summer and holding the government to account.
As always, I am honoured and grateful to represent Halifax Armdale in the Legislature. If there’s something on your mind, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here to listen and help.
Sincerely,
Rod
Your MLA for Halifax Armdale
